So, Jenny's comment on my last post reminded me that I need to update my blog. Here are some recent pics of the pupperdoodles as I like to call them. They are doing great. We lost two but we have four that seem to be doing well. One of them we call Squirmy because he is... well... squirmy. He is very small, definitely the runt of the litter. I've kind of grown attached to him though. The other three are definitely NOT SMALL as you can see.

We have been doing great. Summer has come to an end for the kids at least. They start back to school tomorrow (Monday). They are so excited. I know it won't be long before they are not excited anymore, but irritated that they have to get up early instead of watching T.V. I'm guessing about Wednesday for Katie, maybe Friday for Chas.

Katie is quickly becoming too cool for me. Too cool for any of us, really. She informed me not long ago that she is ready to move out. She is seven. Oh boy. That's all I have to say about that.

Chas is still the most adorable child ever. He recently picked out some fire engine pajamas when we were out shopping for school clothes and I couldn't resist. He loves them and they are the cutest thing ever! It has become painfully clear to me that his days of cuteness are numbered and I am holding on for dear life. So, I bought him another pair of pajamas (Mario Kart) yesterday just for good measure. They aren't as cute as the fire engine pajamas, but they will do. I have always desperately tried to keep Chas little for as long as possible, but time marches on and I know the inevitable is soon approaching.

But it is not here yet and I am going to enjoy every minute of cuteness that I have left. Tonight he told me that he really wished he was a dog because then he could dig in the yard whenever he wanted to. The cutest thing he does, though, is recite commercials. He loves commercials and gets so excited over the claims they make about the product/place/etc., I love how gullible and innocent he is. The other day he saw a commercial about some weight loss thing and he goes to Eric and says, "Daddy, do you want to be skinny like Mommy? Here is what you need to do... " it was so funny. Eric thought that I put him up to it, but I did not.

I feel like I should say something more about Katie. Katie is desperate to be grown up and it is killing me. She wants a cell phone so she can text her friends (never mind that none of them have cell phones). She wants her own facebook page. She wants her own web show. What is a web show anyway??? She wants, she wants, she wants! She does NOT want to hold my hand in public. Ever. She wants her own room. At least three times a week she wants to go live with Aunt Betsy, because as she once told us, "her kids have never even cried... ever!" Aunt Betsy is the best mother on the planet according to Katie. She never makes her kids clean up, or eat their vegetables, or turn off the T.V., etc., Katie is just sure of it. The other thing that Katie is known for is her drama. Oh the drama! She gets hurt/sick a LOT. And it is very dramatic. The slightest little thing sends her into a tailspin of emotions. The other day she was wailing because she hurt her knee. I glanced at the knee and it looked fine to me. When she wouldn't quit squalling about it, I asked her, rather impatiently, what she wanted me to do about it, to which she replies, "Well, at least LOOK at it! Be a M O T H E R!" I thought that was pretty funny. I love my Katie even though she drives me crazy and I know she loves me too. The truth is, she reminds me of myself a lot when I was her age and I try to remember that when I am at my wits end with her. I caught her trying to shave her legs the other day, so I showed her the scar on my leg that I got when I tried to cut the hair off with scissors when I was about her age because I didn't know you were supposed to use a razor, I just knew my Mom didn't have hair on HER legs.

Oh well, this is life and life is good.

William W. Masterson, administrator of Ballard Chumney, against Lewis Chumney of Claiborne County; Delina Chumney, widow of said Ballard Chumney; and John Chumney as guardian of David, Margaret, Jane, William, and Elizabeth, all minor children of said Ballard. Said Ballard came to the said Masterson's house on his way to Mexico in 1847 and died there. Among other things, said Masterson is seeking direction as to how to dispose of $400 of counterfeit notes. 9 May 1851. (p.142-145)

Bill of complaint of Thomas Sadler against Erastus Smith and A. Young, administrators of B. C. Chumbley; Daniel Chumbley and wife Eliza, Thomas Dunn and wife Rachel, John Chumbley, Richard Chumbley, Jimmy Chumbley, and Elizabeth Chumbley of Wilson County; Ross Keath and wife Polly of DeKalb County; John Tarpley and wife (Martha) of Illinois as the only heirs of Richard Chumbley; and Lafayette Sadler, George Sadler, Polly Jones, the widow of James Jones who has since the death of said Jones married a man whose name is not known, Theophilus West and wife Martha, the only heirs of William Sadler. The land of William Sadler deceased should be sold an equally divided between Thomas Sadler, Lafayette Sadler, and George Sadler, the children of William Sadler. Defendants Martha and Polly, also daughters of William Sadler, were to receive only five dollars. Thomas Sadler states that his grandmother, Jane Sadler, who is now dead gave the tract of land to the said William Sadler. 14 Apr 1869. (P.524-529)

Bill of complaint of W. R. Lewis against George Lewis, R. B. Chumbley and wife Mary, R. P. McClain, J. W. Roberts and wife Mary, William Allen and wife Cynthia, E. F. Robertson and wife Peggy, Paralee Robertson, Sam Cooper and wife Susan, Peter Lewis, and Fannie Lewis of Wilson County; William Bogle and wife Elizabeth of Kentucky; and S. K. Lewis of Texas. About 1865, Carroll Lewis died, leaving a tract of land bounded on the north by the dower of the widow. The orator is a son and one of the heirs of Carroll Lewis. When he purchased the tract of land, he thought his father had a clear title to it, but he did not. It belonged to the heirs of William Chumbley of five out of eleven of them. The orator needs the assistance of the court from being grossly wronged. 24 Jun 1876. (P.486-487)

Greetings -
To try to make this long and wonderful story a bit shorter I'll try to condense. For 2 years I've called and written everywhere I could think of trying to find the burial place of Pleasant Rawley who died in Huntersville,VA (now WV) very early in the war. Finally the 'right' person was contacted and the cemetery was located. Our boys were buried in the town cemetery amongst the townspeople. Over time the graveyard was largely destroyed but is currently being reconstructed by some terrific folks. It's been found and verified 13 TN soldiers are resting there. If any of these names are known to you and you'd like to be informed of the cemetery progress, gravestones, or memorial (someday when it's all together) or could add bios or pictures to the records we'd love to hear from you! If there are any other names that could be added to this list please send them along, even if it's a guess - I can do the research to verify. (I love research and am doing the research for the WV folks.) Please forward this list to anyone who might be interested.

C.R. Waters and wife Elizabeth versus William Barton. Et al. The testator of William Barton, Joshua Barton, died in Oct 142 in Cannon County. He placed in the hands of his son David Barton the two slaves, Henry and Mack. He did not by a written or verbal gift give said slaves to his said son, but the said son received the slaves as “Bailor” and as such he carried them to the State of Texas where they remained as the possession of said David until the death of said David in 1844. After this, Joshua Barton legally appointed James R. Taylor to go to Texas and get said slaves and bring them back and placed in the possession of the said Joshua in 1845 and remained in his possession until his death in 1857. After the death of the said Joshua, complainant Elizabeth, who is the daughter of said David A. brought this suit. If the said David A. ever claimed the slaves as his own, the said Joshua had no knowledge of it. The Chancellor decrees that David A. Barton did not acquire any title to said slaves. 3 April 1860. WHEN GASSAWAY WAS YOUNG
Those settling along the valley in and around the present site of Gassaway were: Benjamin Gassaway, for whom the village was named. He was the father of James R. Gassaway, a Mexican War soldier and father of Hiram Gassaway, a progressive farmer of that neighborhood and for many years a member of the County Court. Benjamin was also the father of Charley Gassaway, the first merchant of the village of Gassaway. George Washington Grizzle, Daniel Grizzle, Ira Hollandsworth, Bill Powell, Calvin Smithson, a Mexican solder, John Jetton, grandfather of Bill Jetton and great grandfather of Sheelah Jetton, Madison Wilcher, Jesse McGee, Fountain Owen, Hugh Morris, Hiram Hale, John Melton, father of Luke and Joe; Arch Markum, Sam George, Henry Campbell, Newton Powell, Sutton Tassey, Ben Bullard (who lived to be 106 years old), Thomas Powell, Alexander Higgan, Sr., Jasper Bogle, (first Constable of that district), James Dodd, (the first Juror).

I am directly descended from Daniel Grizzle who supposedly settled in that area at the same time as Benjamin Gassaway. My understanding is that they came from North Carolina by way of Kentucky. I believe they were from the Nash County, NC area.

Charles Ready versus Joseph Bragg and wife Elizabeth. On 29 Jan 1853, complainant recovered a judgment against the defendant. Joseph Bragg was the legal owner of the tract of land mentioned in the pleading. It appears to the Court that said Joseph Bragg did fraudulently transfer title to the land to his wife Elizabeth Marilla Bragg. He did this to delay and hinder his creditors and especially the said Charles Ready. 5 Oct 1858. (p.207-209)

Indian Creek
This church is situated on the waters of Indian Creek, some eight miles north of Smithville, Dekalb County, Tenn. This church was gathered through the labors of Elders Nathaniel Hays and Archamac Bass, and is an offspring of Salem Baptist Church.
This church was constituted November 1844 with seven members, and united the next year with Salem Association when convened with Hickman’s Creek Church. They numbered at this time twenty members. They first took the name of Caney Fork Church and changed their name to Indian Creek in 1848.
This church has had a fair degree of success, but for the want of records we can give but little of the details.
Pastors: The following, with perhaps others, have served this church as pastor: Elder Henry Fite, Elder J.C. Brien, 1881-83; Elder William Simpson, 1883-1885, Elder J. C. Brien, 1885-88; Elder J. M. Stewart, 1888-91; Elder A. J. Brien, 1891-92; Elder William Simpson, 1892-93; Elder D. C. Taylor, 1893-96; Elder D. W. Taylor, 1896-97; Elder A.J. Waller, 1897-98; Elder J.M. Stewart, 1898-99; Elder D.C. Taylor, 1899-00; Elder D.W. Taylor, 1900-01; Elder W. E. Wauford, 1901.
In the latter part of the seventies a division occurred in the church, which resulted in a few members withdrawing and organizing a Freewill Baptist Church near by. This new fad seemed to proper for a while under the leadership of one Elder Curtis, but we hear it has finally gone out.

Duncan, Elizabeth Duncan, Joseph E. Duncan, ( ) A. Duncan, John Duncan, Winny Duncan, Sarah Duncan, ( ) Duncan, Cary Duncan, Sarah ( ), and William R. Moore of Smith County, Martha ( ) , and John Moore of Sumner County. William H. Allen states that sometime in the year 1839, John Duncan purchased a certain tract of land in DeKalb County from one Reuben (Brown) for the sum of $610. He paid $200 down. He executed his notes for the remainder. Said Brown executed a deed in fee simple for the land to said John Duncan. Duncan shortly thereafter took possession of said land by remaining upon the land. Sometime in Oct 1839, said Duncan departed this life intestate, leaving the said Susannah, his widow, and Nancy who had intermarried with Lilburn Chandler, Catherine who had intermarried with George Grayston, (Richard) M., Elizabeth, Joseph, Jessie, John L., Winney, Sarah H., L ( ), and Cary R. In Smith Co. TN Chancery Court Record Book 2
William HALLUM versus William HART Et Al. The bill of complaint of William Hallum of Davidson County against William Hart, and Jefferson Rowland of Smith County; and George Rowland of Arkansas. On 26 Dec 1828, George Rowland was indebted to the said William Hallum in the amount of $385 for which he executed his note. The said George has been for some years and is now a non resident of this State, and has been generally unable to pay the amount. But by the death of his father, he became entitled to a distributive part of his estate. The negroes of David Rowland deceased is a part of which the said George is entitled as a distributee and legatee of said David. The slaves were sold under a decree of court. Hallum has made some exertion to get his debt satisfied. He is apprehensive that the money from the sale may be taken out of the State. The said David left a will by which he directed that his property be equally divided into six parts and the said George is entitled to one part. Hallum is asking the court to injoin Hart and Jefferson Rolwand from paying over to said George Rowland any part of said fund until further order from the court. Feb. 1841. (p.222-224)

ROWLAND versus PAYNE. The bill of complaint of James Rowland as guardian for Mary Ann Rowland, James C. Rowland, Sally E. Rowland, and George F. Rowland, his minor children; David W. Denton and wife Elizabeth, and Jacob W. Roe and wife Martha against John Payne and Joseph Payne, all of Smith County. William Payne made his will in 1835 and died in 1836. He appointed his sons, John and Joseph, as his executors. There was devised to the widow for life a tract of land on which he lived, containing 83 acres. The widow died in Nov 1837. Joseph Payne received a negro woman named Peggy and a boy named Gideon. John Payne received a negro woman named Cate and a boy named Carrol. The said William Payne left at the time of his death four children, namely, the said Joseph and John Payne; Ann Carpenter; and Patsy Rowland, the latter of whom is now dead. James Rowland was the husband of the said Patsy. He was appointed guardian for all of his and her children, being eight in number. David W. Denton has recently married said Elizabeth. Jacob W. Row has intermarried with the said Martha, both being daughters of the said Patsy Rowland, the daughter of the said William Payne. Complainants insist that they are entitled by law to one fourth of the said land. 9 Feb 1841. (p.630-639)
